Ohio University College of Education Hosts Annual Spring Education Conference

ATHENS, Ohio (April 2, 2001) -- The College of Education is hosting its Annual Spring Education Conference on Friday, Apr. 6 in McCracken Hall from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sponsored by the College of Education's Society of Alumni & Friends, this event brings alumni back to campus for a day to give professional and career guidance and advice to current College of Education students. Through panel discussions, mock interviews and one-on-one conversations, alumni share their experiences on what it is like to enter the real world and the work force for the first time. This year's topics include sessions on developing and organizing personal portfolios, teaching a foreign language, tackling your first teaching assignment, classroom realities and interviewing techniques.

SCHEDULE OF SESSIONS -- SPRING EDUCATION CONFERENCE

8:00 a.m. -- Continental Breakfast and Registration

9:00-10:00 a.m. -- Session I

  1. Inclusion Strategies and Models for Special Education and Regular Education Teachers
    Panel discussion on how to effectively work with special education inclusion students.
  2. Personal Portfolios for Professional Use/Resume
    Develop, organize and improve materials for the interview process.
    Samples will be available or bring your own.
  3. Interviewing Techniques/Demonstration
    Tips on successful interviews and how to land that first position.
  4. Keeping on Track: Using the State Model, Graded Course of Study and Proficiency Outcomes to Guide Planning and Teaching
    Panel discussion on how to incorporate these critical documents in your lesson planning.

10:10-11:10 a.m. -- Session II

  1. Hands-On Science Activities for Proficiency Outcomes K-6
    Discussion of best practices using "hands-on, minds-on" science and math. Practical suggestions for instruction in these areas.
  2. Hiring Practices, Resumes and Applications
    Important tips for getting hired, teaching assignments and supplemental contracts.
    Panel discussion on what school administrators hope to see.
  3. Your First Year Assignment: Getting Administration, Teachers, Students, Counselors and Parents on Your Side
    Panel discussion of teachers and administrators to help you get off to a good start!
  4. Prekindergarten and Kindergarten
    Activities and strategies that enhance the curriculum.
  5. Exciting Strategies and Activities for Teaching Foreign Language and ESL
    With an influx of limited English-proficient students, this session will help teachers in all areas.

11:20 a.m.-12:20 p.m. -- Session III

  1. Personal Portfolios for Professional Use

  5. Writing Across the Curriculum
    Strategies and techniques for teaching writing and learning how to include writing in all content areas.
