ATHENS, Ohio (March 20, 2001) -- Ohio University President Robert Glidden released a statement today following the announcement that the president of Indiana University has selected Ohio University Provost Sharon Stephens Brehm to be the next vice president of academic affairs and chancellor of Indiana University Bloomington.
Brehm was the choice of the president and a delegation of IU trustees who interviewed her and two other finalists for the job for a final time last Friday. Brehm's position with the university won't be official until the IU Board of Trustees votes on her appointment at its meeting April 5-6 on the Indianapolis campus. She would be the first woman to hold the post of Bloomington chancellor.
"For nearly five years, Ohio University has benefitted from Provost Sharon Brehm's commitment to academic excellence. Sharon is one of those rare people who easily combines imagination and pragmatism. She is a visionary with a proven track record of real-world results.
Given her level of talent and the height of her accomplishments, it is no surprise that Indiana University President Myles Brand has selected her to be the next chancellor of Indiana University Bloomington. I have no doubt that she will be an excellent addition to that admirable institution. She will make a superb university chancellor for the same reasons she was a superb provost: her strong academic values, broad understanding of American higher education and ability to work effectively with many different constituencies.
Her insight, dedication and endless energy have been essential to maintaining and strengthening Ohio University's standing as a top public institution. I know I join the entire Ohio University campus in offering her the deepest gratitude and the best wishes for the future."
