ATHENS, Ohio (March 26, 2001) -- Sharon Stephens Brehm has been tapped as chancellor and vice president of academic affairs of Indiana University Bloomington.
Indiana University President Myles Brand announced March 20 that Brehm was his choice for the position, and the university's Board of Trustees is expected to approve her appointment when it meets April 5-6.
"This is a bittersweet moment for me," said Brehm, who has served as provost since 1996. "I am looking forward to having the opportunity to serve Indiana University as the new chancellor of the Bloomington campus. But it will be very hard to leave so many of my good friends and colleagues here in Athens."
Brehm will succeed Kenneth R.R. Gros Louis, who will retire June 30 after 21 years as chancellor and vice president. She will remain at Ohio University through spring quarter, assuming her new post July 1.
"For nearly five years, Ohio University has benefited from Provost Sharon Brehm's commitment to academic excellence," President Robert Glidden said. "Sharon is one of those rare people who easily combines imagination and pragmatism. Her insight, dedication and endless energy have been essential to maintaining and strengthening Ohio University's standing as a top public institution."
Brehm said she is proud of her association with Ohio University.
"It has been a great honor to be able to contribute to the continuing development of Ohio University and a great pleasure to work with people in the region and throughout the state," she said. "Ohio University is a strong, vibrant university with great accomplishments in the present and great potential for the future. I will always feel a strong connection to this wonderful university."
