MBA Regional Consulting Competition to be Decided Tuesday

Contact: Jess Goode, (740) 593-1886

ATHENS, Ohio (March 2, 2001) -- A $3,000 award will be given to the first-place team in Ohio University's MBA Consulting Competition at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March, 6, in the 1804 Lounge at Baker University Center.

The competition is a joint project between the College of Business and the Voinovich Center for Leadership and Public Affairs. In January, 15 teams of MBA students were assigned to serve as marketing, business and operational consultants to Appalachian Ohio small businesses. After the first round of judging, the field was whittled down to five teams for the final competition on Tuesday.

"This competition is an excellent opportunity to allow our MBA students to gain valuable experience while giving local businesses access to quality consulting," said Voinovich Center Associate Director Hugh Sherman. "Each year, I am impressed by the talent of our participants as well as the breadth and scope of entrepreneurship in Appalachian Ohio."

Since early January, participants have worked for a variety of regional businesses, including ConnectLink, a broadband Internet service provider based in Lawrence County; Monroe MFG, an apparel manufacturer based in Monroe County; and Hucks Cabinets, a custom cabinet and furniture manufacturer based in Washington County.

Tuesday's final round of the competition will be judged by five successful businesspeople, including Kay Hammer, president and CEO of Evolutionary Technologies; Diane Reynolds, a partner with Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff Attorneys at Law; David Scholl, president and CEO of Diagnostic Hybrids Inc.; and Neill Lane, president and CEO of Sunpower Inc.
