ATHENS, Ohio (February 12, 2001) -- Junior back Lauren Mazziotto (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township HS) was selected to the United States Field Hockey's U-21 Team this past weekend at William and Mary. As a member of the team, Mazziotto will travel to Germany during the week of March 5 to 11. While there, the team will be playing Germany's U-21 team and several German club teams.
"I'm really excited to be selected to the team. This will be a new level of play for me, and I hope the international experience will be a good one," said Mazziotto.
Mazziotto was selected the U.S. "A" Camp last fall, where she has participated in several practices leading up to her selection. She is the first Bobcat, since Gail Hudson in 1981, to be selected to the "A" camp, and the first player to play internationally since 1984 when Anita Corl Miller-Huntsman was a member of the 1984 bronze medal winning U.S. Olympic Team.
"I am very excited for Lauren, but most of all very proud. She has worked extremely hard, and done a lot of extra things to make this happen. I have watched her improve over the past three years, and I'm really glad it is paying off for her," head coach Shelly Morris.
While at Ohio, Mazziotto has started in all 62 games, scoring six goals and tallying 14 assists. She has also led the team in defensive saves all three seasons, setting the school record with 18 in 1998, and totaling 33 for her career. She was named to the first team All-MAC and the West Region All-American second team this past season. She led the team with 12 assists tying her for fourth in the MAC. The two-time MAC player of the week was second on the team with 18 points. She had career highs in goals (3), assists and points.
Last season she helped the Bobcats to a 10-10 record and a runner-up finish in the MAC Championship. "This will help us in many ways. We will have another player on our team with international experience and hopefully it will help raise our level of play," said Morris.
Mazziotto is also a fine student. She was named to the MAC honor roll last fall for maintaining a 3.13 GPA in communication systems management.
