Nationally Known Counselor to Receive Award at Ohio University

ATHENS, Ohio (January 31, 2001) -- Dr. Don Locke, a nationally known leader in the area of multicultural counseling, will share his insights with Ohio University students and faculty on campus Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 5 and 6. Locke, the 2000 Thomas J. Sweeney Counseling Leader in Residence Award recipient, will serve as a scholar in residence, speaking in classes, with groups of faculty and with local clinicians.

Locke is a professor and director of the Graduate Center at North Carolina State University in Asheville. The Sweeney Award, which is sponsored by the Ohio University Department of Counseling and Higher Education, recognizes leadership at the national level that has significantly influenced the counseling profession and excellence in scholarship.

Locke is a leader in multicultural counseling, which responds to the need to have mental health approaches that are culturally sensitive to a diverse population. He is president of the Association of Counselor Education and Supervision, a division of the American Counseling Association. He also is a national scholar of multiculturalism and culturally responsive counseling. His work is well respected and often cited by clinicians, educators and students.
