Ohio Rally Falls Short at Miami, 56-53
OXFORD, Ohio (January 27, 2001) -- Ohio shot just 22.7 percent and scored 15 points in the first half, but nearly rallied before falling 56-53 to Miami Saturday afternoon in Oxford.
The Bobcats capitalized on several missed free throws in the final two minutes to close a nine-point deficit to just two in the closing seconds, but Andrea Gay missed a potential game winning three-pointer with two seconds remaining. Heather Laughlin's three-point attempt to force overtime at the buzzer fell just short.
Ohio forced the RedHawks into a season-high 30 tunrovers, but committed 30 themselves.
Lori Moorman posted her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Laughlin and Cathy Szall chipped in 10 points a piece. With 31 ticks left on the clock, Miami led 54-50, but hit only two of nine free throws over the remaining time to give the Bobcats an opportunity. For the game, Miami shot 43 percent from the field compared to the Bobcats' 34 percent. Ohio (6-13, 3-5 MAC) did win the war on the glass, outrebounding Miami 37-34.
Miami's Beth Roederer finished the day with a game-high 12 points, while Heather Cusick and Hollie Nelsen also reached double digits, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively.
In the first half, both teams struggled from the field. However, Miami managed to gain a 27-15 halftime advantage, following a 14-4 run to end the half. The Bobcats led 9-8 with 11:36 left, but were held to just two free throws over nearly a 10-minute span.
Ohio, which had won three of four games since a six-game losing streak, continues its road swing Wednesday night at Marshall. Miami (9-8, 3-4 MAC) is back in action on Tuesday when it attempts to avenge a 71-69 road loss to Kent State earlier in the season.
