ATHENS, Ohio (January 19, 2001) -- Ohio head football coach Brian Knorr announced the addition of Eric Washington to the Bobcat football staff. As an assistant coach, Washington will work with the defensive front.
Washington joins the Bobcats after spending the last three years as the defensive coordinator for the United States Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, Rhode Island. He worked primarily with linebackers and defensive tackles, while preparing weekly scouting reports and the defensive playbook.
"Eric is a young man with a diverse background dealing with student-athletes," said Knorr. "He has great experience in our defensive package having been the coordinator at the Naval Academy Prep School."
Washington was a graduate assistant at Texas A & M in the 1997 season. He prepared opponent offensive scouting reports for the Aggie defense and assisted the Football Operations Director with monitoring the academic progress of the student-athletes.
Washington has been an assistant coach at three high schools, most recently at Amon Carter-Riverside High School in Fort Worth, Texas in 1996. He also coached at Westmont High School (Westmont, Ill.), Captain Shreve High School (Shreveport, La.) and Ruston High School (Ruston, La.).
He has also spent time in Kansas, where he worked at the Jayhawk Football Camp. Washington also was a tutor and counselor at the University of Kansas Governor's Academy. While there, he mentored "at-risk" Kansas high school students and conducted peer counseling sessions.
The native of Shreveport, La., Washington graduated from Northwood High School in 1987. He earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education from Grambling State University in 1993. He was commissioned as a United States Navy Reserve Office in 1998 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade last April.
