Activities Planned for First-Year Parents Weekend at Ohio University

ATHENS, Ohio (January 17, 2001) -- An improvisational performance by the Chicago Comedy Company will be among the highlights of First-Year Parents Weekend events at Ohio University Friday, Jan. 19 through Sunday, Jan. 21. The Chicago Comedy Company will perform at 9:15 p.m. Friday in the Baker University Center Ballroom. Admission is free.
Some of the other events include the official welcome and reception from 8 to 9 p.m. Friday in Baker Center and a Parents' Coffee Hour at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Baker University Center Ballroom. Representatives from Residence Life, Counseling, Career Services and the Office of the Dean of Students will discuss common issues and concerns of the families of first-year students.
At 8 p.m. Saturday, former professional boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter will speak in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. There will be several other cultural, social and athletic events during the weekend.
The weekend is designed to allow parents and families of new college students to view campus life first-hand and capture a taste of their children's college experience.
Following is a schedule of First-Year Parents Weekend events. Admission will be charged for some events.
- FRIDAY, JAN. 19
- 10 a.m.-4 p.m.: Inauguration Day Dart Throw at College Gate.
- 5 p.m.: "The Hurricane" movie at the Athena Cinema.
- 7:30 p.m.: Ice hockey vs. Eastern Michigan, Bird Arena.
- 8 p.m.: Tuba/Percussion Duo, Music Building Recital Hall.
- 8-9 p.m.: Official University Welcome and Reception for First Year Parents and Students, Baker University Center Ballroom.
- 8-11p.m.: Interact for Change. Games and improvisation to bridge diversity gap in Baker University Center Room 334.
- 8 pm.-Midnight: Open Stage in Baker University Center Front Room.
- 9 p.m.-1 a.m.: Cosmic Bowling in Baker University Center Recreation Room.
- 9:15 p.m.: Improvisational Comedy Show by Chicago Comedy Company in Baker University Center Ballroom.
- 10:30 p.m.: Frozen Friday Recreational Skate following ice hockey game in Bird Arena.
- Midnight: "The Hurricane" movie at the Athena Cinema (admission to all showings of "The Hurricane" is free with the purchase of a ticket to the lecture by Rubin "Hurricane" Carter).
- SATURDAY, JAN. 20
- 9 a.m.: Parents' Coffee Hour, Part II in Baker University Center Ballroom.
- 11 a.m.: Wrestling match between Ohio University and the University of North Carolina in the Convocation Center.
- 4 p.m.: Men's basketball game vs. the University of Akron in the Convocation Center.
- 5 p.m.: "The Hurricane" movie at the Athena Cinema.
- 6:30 p.m.: Brass concert in the Music Building Recital Hall.
- 7:30 p.m.: Ice hockey game vs. Eastern Michigan University in Bird Arena.
- 8 p.m.: Rubin "Hurricane" Carter lecture in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.
- 9 p.m.: Coffeehouse Concert by Beth Wood in the Baker University Center Front Room.
- 9 p.m.-1 a.m.: Game Night in the Baker University Center Recreation Room.
- Midnight: "The Hurricane" movie at the Athena Cinema.
- SUNDAY, JAN. 21
- 11 a.m.-2 p.m.: Brunch in Jefferson, Nelson and Boyd Dining Halls.
- 1 p.m.: Green and White Club Winter Sports Tailgate in the Convocation Center Rohr Room.
- 2 p.m.: Wrestling match vs. Central Michigan in the Convocation Center.
- 5 p.m.: "The Hurricane" movie at the Athena Cinema.
