ATHENS, Ohio (January 12, 2001) -- With Ohio holding on to a slim 16-12 lead over Binghamton, the Bobcats closed the meet with three technical falls to pull away and defeat the Bearcats 31-12. Mark Shrout (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Dan Bednar (Brecksville) and Brad Bauer (Kent) picked up the big wins.
After Binghamton's Seneca Todd defeated Ohio's John Wervey (Chagrin Falls), and cut Ohio's lead to 13-12, Bobcat wrestler Luke Moore (Springfield) earned a tough decision over Jeff McAveney to give Ohio some breathing room at 16-12.
That was all Ohio needed as Shrout (10-7) defeated Chris Karas 20-5, Bednar (13-2) won his match 17-0 and Bauer (7-4) closed things out with a 20-5 victory. Also picking up wins for the Bobcats were Shane Hartzler (Orrville), Andy Reichenbach (Miami, Fla.) and Ben Gabriel (Zanesville). Hartzler picked up his first pin of the season, while Reichenbach majored Chris Fronhofer and Gabriel earned a 10-5 decision over Justin Hoch.
Ohio will travel down to Raleigh, N.C. on Saturday to take part in the North Carolina State Duals. Their opponents will be fifth-ranked Illinois, Appalachian State and Campbell University. Ohio returns home next Saturday when they host #22 North Carolina at 11:00 a.m.
