Ohio Athletics Hall of Fame Adds Five in Class of 2000 This Weekend

ATHENS, Ohio (September 14, 2000) -- Five former Bobcats will be inducted into the Ohio Athletics Hall of Fame in ceremonies this weekend, including special recognition at halftime of Ohio's football game against Tennessee Tech on Saturday, Sept. 16. Two basketball players, two track athletes and a football player comprise the class of 2000 which will be inducted during a special banquet on Friday night, Sept. 15.

Ron Harter, a four-year letterwinner in football from 1980-84, was named the first-team All-MAC kicker in 1981. He was named to the Football News All-Sophomore Team the same year. Harter received AP Honorable Mention All-America honors in 1982.

Greg Jones, a member of the track team from 1986-1990, was named an All-American in the shot put in 1988. He placed second in that event at the 1988 NCAA Championships. A four-year letterwinner, Jones also set the Men's Outdoor Track Record for the shot put in both 1987 and 1988.

Tim Joyce, a member of the basketball team from 1976-79, is the recipient of the Glenn Randall Lifetime Achievement Award. The award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the advancement and support of Ohio University Intercollegiate Athletics. Joyce was named first-team All-MAC in 1978-79. He graduated with 1,468 points, holding the school record for career scoring average until 1995.

Two-sport star Mary Catherine Taylor is being honored for her achievements in track and field. She held school records in the shot put, discus and javelin. She was also the MAC record holder in the shot put (48'4") and discus (159'5"). Taylor, voted Most Outstanding Field Athlete by her peers all four years, was a member of the basketball team from 1981-85.

Steven D. Skaggs held four career records for the Ohio basketball team from 1976-79. He graduated as the career leader in points (1,741), field-goal attempts (1495), field goals made (703) and free throws made (335). He was a first team Academic All-American from 1977-79. Skaggs was the recipient of a unique award - NCAA postseason scholarship in 1978-79. The honor is given to only six student-athletes a year among 179 Division I schools.

The Class of 2000 will be honored at halftime of Saturday's football game with Tennessee Tech. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Peden Stadium.
