ATHENS, Ohio (January 5, 2001) -- The deadline is Feb. 1 for Ohio University students to apply for grants available under a new program designed to promote undergraduate research.
The Provost's Undergraduate Research Fund will provide up to $50,000 annually beginning this spring to enable students to pursue research projects. The program, announced in the fall by Provost Sharon Stephens Brehm, provides money for research-related travel, materials and supplies. A limited number of awards can support apprenticeship positions.
The awards are available to undergraduate students enrolled on the Athens campus to support original research, scholarship and creative activity, said Honors Tutorial College program coordinator Jan Hodson, who is overseeing the program.
Students must be endorsed by a tenure-track faculty member, who will serve as a mentor and oversee the research. Applications must be submitted by Feb. 1 to be considered for awards that will be announced March 1.
To apply, students must submit a proposal describing the research project and its budget. Application forms are available from the Honors Tutorial College office at 35 Park Place, in all deans' offices or on the Web at www.ohiou.edu/honors/.
A committee with representatives chosen from each college will decide what research projects will be funded. The money will be available spring quarter.
