ATHENS, Ohio (January 4, 2001) -- Ohio head football coach, Brian Knorr, today named Greg Gregory as the Bobcats' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks' coach. Gregory joins the program after holding a similar position at Richmond. The announcement is the first appointment by Knorr who was named Ohio's 27th head coach on December 12.
"The turnaround of our program over the last six years has been greatly attributed to option football," explained Knorr. "We have recruited our personnel to fit this system and now we have added one of the most experienced and talented option-oriented coaches in the country as our coordinator. Greg had a great deal of success with the option at the United States Military Academy and has been associated with winning programs throughout his coaching career. We are very excited to make him our first hire."
During his tenure at Army, Gregory helped the Cadets to the school's only four bowl appearances and to top-25 rankings in four seasons. He also guided Army's option offense to rankings among the best in the nation in rushing.
While at Army, Gregory served in a variety of capacities. He spent two years with the wide receivers before assisting the tight ends and serving as head coach of the junior varsity team. During 1985 and 1986, he led the running backs before moving into the offensive coordinator position in 1987. In 1991, Gregory was named Associate Head Coach for the Cadets, a position that he held for six seasons.
Last season at Richmond, Gregory helped the Spiders to a number six I-AA national ranking and a share of the Atlantic 10 title. Richmond led the A-10 in rushing with a 266.5 average that also ranked 10th in the nation.
Prior to his stint at Richmond, Gregory was the head coach at Missouri Southern for two seasons. He turned around a program that was 0-11 before his arrival, to a 3-7 mark in 1998 and a 5-6 record in 1999. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Virginia.
Gregory, 43, earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Richmond in 1980. He played quarterback for the Spiders, earning three letters in football. The native of Mechanicsville, Va. was an all-state football player at Lee-Davis High School while playing for his father, Buddy. He and his wife Judy have three children: two sons Tate and Grant and a daughter Layne.
