One Ohio University Student Killed, Another is Injured in Accident

NOTE: A memorial service for Steve Wesbecher has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at Christ the King University Parish, 75 Stewart Street. For information about the service call 592-2711. Following is the text of a statement issued by the university shortly after the accident.

ATHENS, Ohio (January 3, 2001) -- Ohio University Dean of Students Terry Hogan confirmed today that one Ohio University student was killed and another was seriously injured in an early morning accident near Athens. Steve R. Wesbecher, 28, was killed in the one-car accident at about 3 a.m. today on Athens County Road 25, Rock Rifle Road. The Strongsville native was a senior majoring in sociology.

Ohio University student Jason Proffitt, 25, of Kettering was one of two passengers injured in the accident.

"The entire Ohio University community is deeply saddened by this tragic death," Hogan said. "Our thoughts and condolences are with Steve's family, and we hope for a speedy recovery for those injured in the accident."

A funeral Mass will be conducted for Wesbecher at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Berea, Ohio. There will be no calling hours. Flowers may be sent to the Chambers Funeral Home, 86 Adelbert St., Berea, Ohio 44017. Students and other friends interested in attending the service can contact the Office of the Dean of Students, 202 Baker University Center, 593-1800, for travel directions and additional information.

Plans for a memorial service on campus are being considered pending the desires of the family.
