ATHENS, Ohio (December 18, 2000) -- Ohio University has created a new series of scholarships to attract high-achieving students to next fall's freshman class. The scholarships were recommended by the University Planning Advisory Council and announced by Provost Sharon Stephens Brehm.
"The intention of these awards is to recognize and reward high-achieving students applying to Ohio University," said Brehm. "The scholarships will help ensure that today's brightest and most accomplished students give Ohio University their very serious consideration as they select the college or university they will attend."
The new series of academic scholarships includes four awards, each with specific eligibility criteria. Presidential Scholars must rank in the top 20 percent of their high school class and have received ACT scores of 32 to 36 or SAT scores of 1400 to 1600. University Scholars must be high school valedictorians who scored 30 to 31 on the ACT or 1320 to 1390 on the SAT. Both University and Presidential scholars recipients will receive full in-state tuition. The Founders Award winners must rank in the top 20 percent of their high school class and have received ACT scores of 30 to 31 or SAT scores of 1320 to 1390. Founders Awards recipients will receive $3,500. The Valedictorian Award will go to high school valedictorians with a 29 or less on the ACT or 1310 or less on the SAT, with awardees receiving $1,000.
Students applying to majors in the College of Fine Arts are eligible for the Presidential and University scholars and Valedictorian Awards. In lieu of the Founders Award, the College of Fine Arts grants artistic scholarships based on talent. Auditions and/or portfolios are required for consideration for these awards. The college will determine talent award amounts.
The awards are renewable up to a total of 12 quarters. Recipients must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 and earn at least 16 credit hours per quarter to retain the scholarships.
Students must complete the application process and be accepted for admission to the university by Feb. 1. No separate application is required for scholarship consideration. Scholarship recipients can confirm acceptance of the award by returning a completed housing contract by May 1.
"We are very excited about the student achievement award program," said Kip Howard, assistant vice president for enrollment services. "With this program, we are able to award scholarships to a larger number of quality students than we have been able to in the past. We very much hope to see many high-achieving students attend Ohio University."
