ATHENS, Ohio (November 30, 2000) -- Executives from Worldcom recently presented a gift of $5,000 to the J. Warren McClure School of Communication Systems Management of Ohio University's College of Communication.
The gift is one of many in a longstanding relationship between Worldcom and the school, which teaches students how to design and manage voice/data/imaging systems. The gift from Worldcom's International Operations and Engineering Group is to be used at the school's discretion.
McClure Director Trevor Roycroft said that the gift likely would be invested in the school's laboratory facilities and resource center.
Worldcom has hired a large number of graduates from the McClure School and will continue the tradition again this year, according to Dan Peril, national manager of college recruiting at Worldcom. The company hired 30 graduates last year and already expects to take approximately 20 this year, he said.
"The CSM school does a remarkable job of developing talent for the telecommunications industry and for the continued success of Worldcom," Peril said. "The students are prepared to contribute almost immediately upon employment."
On a nationwide recruitment scale, Ohio University's program ranks among the best, according to Peril.
"The ratio of graduates who have been able to attain leadership and management positions has been exemplary," Peril said.
Roycroft explained that the school's graduates "go out the door very well prepared because they have essentially been living in the industry. They are given a broad foundation in the technology, but also in its deployment, its use by businesses and its regulation by the government," he said.
Worldcom employs more than 77,000 people in 65 countries and is a provider of facilities-based and fully integrated local, long distance, international and Internet services.
