LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (November 27, 2000) -- The Ohio Wrestling team finished seventh out of 13 teams at the Mat-Town U.S.A Tournament hosted by Lock Haven University this weekend. The Bobcats totaled 80.5 points, placing no higher than fourth in any of the weight classes. Missouri won the tournament finishing with 139 points, one more than second-place Pittsburgh.

Four Ohio wrestlers finished the day with four victories. John Wervey (Chagrin Falls) went 4-1 while Ryan Smith (Dayton), Shane Hartzler (Orrville) and Mark Shrout (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished 4-2. Wervey (165) sandwiched his loss between two wins. After falling in his third match, Wervey bounced back with two victories, defeating Jake Cairns of Old Dominion, 3-2 for fifth place. Smith (157) reeled off four straight wins after losing his opening match, but fell in his third-place match to Oscar Santiago of Purdue, 9-4. Hartzler (141) split his first two matches, then won three consecutive matches. He too lost his third-place match, falling to J.P. Reese of Missouri, 4-1. Shrout (184) bounced back from an opening loss to win three in a row. After losing his next match, he defeated John Opfar of Slippery Rock, 10-2, for seventh place.

The Bobcats will wrestle in two weeks on December 9 when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa. for the Sheridan Duels. North Carolina State, Lehigh and Rutgers will be the other participating schools.
