ATHENS, Ohio (November 9, 2000) -- For the eighth consecutive year, Ohio University's Hugh M. Culbertson Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) has received national recognition.
At this year's national conference in Chicago, the chapter was awarded the Frederick H. Teahan Award for Outstanding Chapter Newsletter for its external publication, "pro*fes*sion*al." The public relations magazine is sent to all alumni of the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism public relations sequence.
" 'Pro*fes*sion*al' is not only outstanding for what judges see on its pages, but more for the endless energy of managing editor, Stacy Apar, the students who helped plan, write and fund-raise, and journalism faculty and alumni," said Amy Nance, executive editor of "pro*fes*sion*al."
Frederick H. Teahan Awards honor outstanding activities within PRSSA chapters across the nation. Teahan helped to establish PRSSA. This year's honor marks the fourth time in nine years that the chapter has won "Outstanding Newsletter." The chapter has previously won the following national awards:
- 1993 Outstanding Chapter Newsletter
- 1994 Outstanding Chapter Firm
- 1995 Outstanding Chapter Newsletter
- 1996 Outstanding Chapter Adviser
- 1997 Outstanding Chapter Firm
- 1998 Outstanding PRSA/PRSSA Chapter Relationship
- 1998 Outstanding Chapter Newsletter
- 1999 Outstanding Chapter Web site
Seniors Ann Chu, Marjean Remy and Jennifer Yakubisin received the National President's Citation for outstanding contributions to the chapter. Chu and Remy also received the highest honor given to PRSSA members: the National Gold Key Award, which recognizes academic excellence in public relations and leadership qualities in PRSSA.
Junior Doug Rupert attended the conference courtesy of the CodispotiTechnology Section Grant. The grant, for students interested in high-tech PR, covered Rupert's registration fee. Nineteen PRSSA members represented Ohio University at the conference.
