ATHENS, Ohio (October 30, 2000) -- Ted J. Foster, associate professor of communication at Ohio University, will receive the National Communication Association's Lifetime Teaching Award during the association's conference in Seattle Saturday, Nov. 11.
The award was created by the NCA Legislative Council to recognize a lifetime of outstanding teaching by NCA members at any grade level. Individuals recognized with the award demonstrate a long-term commitment to excellence in teaching. Nomination letters come from former students and colleagues.
Foster, an NCA member since 1959, received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Southern Illinois University and his doctorate from Ohio University. He has been a professor at both Evansville College and Ohio University, where he also served as director of forensics and debate. Foster co-authored the book "Speaking in Public" and has had numerous articles published in academic journals.
Raymie McKerrow, president of NCA and associate dean of the College of Communication, said the award recognizes a professor's influence on the lives of students, especially graduate students.
"It's designed for those who are master teachers," McKerrow said, "those who have the highest standards in the classroom. Ted is a deserving candidate."
Foster, a member of the Ohio University faculty for 35 years, cites his concern for students as his greatest teaching strength. "I enjoy working with students and generally advise and help them when they ask, and sometimes when they don't," admits Foster.
