National Osteopathic Medicine Week Events Promote Healthy Lifestyles for Girls and Young Women

Contact: Kevin M. Sanders, Writer/Editor, (740) 593-0896

ATHENS, Ohio (October 27, 2000) -- Each year Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-COM) celebrates National Osteopathic Medicine (NOM) Week with other osteopathic physicians and organizations across the nation. Each year NOM Week focuses on important public health issues as they affect segments of our population. This year OU-COM celebrates NOM Week Oct. 29 - Nov. 4. Throughout the Athens area, the college will sponsor activities designed to promote better health, health-care awareness and the benefits of osteopathic medicine.

This year's observance, "Health Issues of Girls and Young Women," is focused on informing girls and young women between ages 12 and 24 of the importance of an early commitment to preventive health care and adopting a healthy lifestyle.

"There are approximately 22 million females between ages 12 and 24 living in the United States today. They are increasingly more active in school, extracurricular sports activities and are exposed to the dangers of drugs, alcohol and sexual activity more than ever before," said Barbara Ross-Lee, D.O., dean of OU-COM.

These growing and maturing young women can greatly reduce their risk for serious disease or illness through regular preventive health care.

Activities held in observance of NOM Week begin Monday, Oct. 30.
