Ohio University Prepares for Athens' Halloween Event

ATHENS, Ohio (October 24, 2000) -- Precautions are being taken across campus as the university readies for Athens' annual Halloween bash and the influx of out-of-town visitors it will bring.

SECURITY

Deans, directors and department heads are to take extra precautions to ensure their areas are secure for the weekend, with interior and exterior doors and windows shut and locked.

About 30 law enforcement officers and staff members will be on duty patrolling campus.

Last year, there were a total of 26 arrests and 11 citations issued on campus during Halloween weekend.
PARKING

To reduce the flow of out-of-town visitors through campus, university parking lots will be restricted -- from 3 p.m. Friday through the weekend -- to vehicles with OU parking tags and student vehicles registered with the Ohio University Police Department. Also, most campus parking lots will be limited to one entrance/exit. Parking will be available at the county fairgrounds, HDL Center and other locations throughout the city.

RESIDENCE LIFE

Guests in residence halls for the weekend must be registered with Residence Life. Each resident is allowed one guest, who must be registered with the residence hall by Monday, Oct. 23. Student ID cards or wrist bands, which will be available to residents and guests, will be needed to enter residence halls. Residents are responsible for any damage caused by their guests.

PERSONAL SAFETY

"With the influx of visitors from out of town, there is an increased potential for victimization by people who will use the anonymity to their advantage," OUPD Chief Ted Jones said.

Jones suggests the following safety tips for students: plan the night ahead of time, realizing you will probably be on foot; remain with people you know; stay in lighted areas; and if youšre going to drink, donšt drink to excess.

Campus Safety conducts programming in residence halls to focus on personal safety and unlawful actions to avoid Halloween weekend.
