ATHENS, Ohio (October 20, 2000) -- Head Softball Coach Roanna Brazier recently announced the hiring of Andrea Costa as an assistant coach. Costa fills the spot vacated earlier this year when assistant coach, Jennifer Jimerson, took a coaching position at her alma mater, Missouri Southern State College.
Costa joins the Bobcat softball program from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. She served as head coach of the Division II softball program, assistant women's volleyball coach, and university admission recruiter last year. Her responsibilities with Bridgeport softball included the oversight of the softball program including recruitment, practice and game scheduling, strength and conditioning, fundraising, budgeting, academic advising, field maintenance, travel arrangements and counseling.
Her other coaching duty was at Fairfield University in Connecticut from 1990-1995 where she was the head women's softball and volleyball coach and the assistant recreation director of activities for the Division I Stags. She had the same responsibilities as she had while at Bridgeport.
Costa was an outstanding student-athlete at Eastern Connecticut State University where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in communications in 1988. During her four-year stay, she was a member of the softball and volleyball teams. As a four-year starter in the outfield, she helped the Warriors win the Division III National Championship in 1985 and 1986 and guided them to third-place finish in 1987 and 1988. She was named to the National all-tournament teams in 1985, 1987, and 1988. In 1988 she earned Division III All-America honors in the outfield. She also was named to the all-region team in 1987 and 1988.
As a volleyball player she was the NCAA Division III All America setter and New England Player of the Year in 1987. She made all-region team in 1986 and 1987. She was honored as the Portuguese O' Jounel Athlete of the Year in 1987.
Since 1985, Costa has worked at several softball and volleyball summer camps. In between her head coaching duties she spent five years working for Federal Express in Milford, Conn. as the Administrative Assistant to the District Managers. She also spent time as a Project Excel Aide in Norwalk, Connecticut and a substitute teacher in Fall River, Mass.
Costa will be inducted into the Eastern Connecticut State University Athletic Hall of Fame this fall.
