Letter to Prospective Students
Thank you for your interest in Neuroscience at Ohio University and welcome to our Web site. I hope that you will be able to find all of the information you need here but if not, please contact me. I am available via e-mail and will be happy to answer any questions you have concerning our Program admissions etc.
The Program was established in the late 1980s with a large grant from the State of Ohio. These ongoing funds are currently used to enhance graduate student stipends (up to $22000) and to provide other forms of financial support for graduate student research activities. The Program includes 18 faculty members from the departments of Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, and Physics and Astronomy. We provide modern research facilities and well funded research programs, having generated over $18 million in external funding in the last 10 years. With these resources we are able to offer excellent educational and research experiences to graduate students in subjects ranging from behavior to the molecular machinery underlying neuronal function.
The Program is designed to maximize faculty-student interactions and students are encouraged to learn a wide variety of experimental approaches and techniques. The Program also offers students ample opportunities to pursue interdisciplinary studies -- for example in the areas of quantitative and computational Neuroscience.
Ohio University is located in Athens, a small town situated in the foothills of southeastern Ohio and largely surrounded by national forest. This rural setting is very attractive and also offers a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities.
As you deliberate your choice of graduate programs, we hope that you will visit Athens so that you can see our campus, our teaching and research facilities, and perhaps meet some of our faculty. You can coordinate a campus visit through the Office of Admissions, but please feel free to contact the Neuroscience Program office for additional information. We are confident that we can provide you with a successful and rewarding educational experience.
Sincerely,
Michael Rowe Ph.D. Director
