Before you apply for a NEARS scholarship you must apply to and be admitted into one of OHIO University's eligible nursing programs:

Where will I attend classes?

Not all programs are offered at all OHIO campuses. To learn more about the program click on the anticipated delivery location in the information on the right side of this page. Before applying for a NEARS Scholarship you must apply for and be admitted to one of these nursing programs. To apply to the program of your choice, visit the link to Application Information.

eCampus is Ohio University's center for online program delivery. The RN to BSN and the MSN are available online.

NEARS eligible nursing degree programs.

The NEARS scholarship may be applied to programs at all nursing degree levels, associate, bachelorate and masters. For more information about any of the programs, click on the program name below.

Associate of Science in Nursing (ADN) is a two year program for individuals wishing to begin study towards obtaining an RN license. Upon completion of the program, graduates are prepared to sit for the RN licensure exam.

The program provides the working or unemployed individual an opportunity to complete the ADN in the classroom.  The program also includes flexible clinical opportunities to meet the program objectives.

Available at OHIO's Chillicothe Campus, Southern Campus (Ironton, OH), and Zanesville Campus.

LPN to ADN is a program for LPNs who have graduated from ANY ACCREDITED LPN School and offers LPNs advanced placement toward an Associate of Science in Nursing.

The program provides the working or unemployed LPN an opportunity to complete the ADN by blending technology-enhanced online courses with classroom instruction.  The program also includes flexible clinical opportunities to meet the program objectives.

Available at OHIO's Chillicothe Campus, Southern Campus (Ironton, OH), and Zanesville Campus.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is the traditional 3 year program for individuals who desire to become a registered nurse with a bacheloreatte education.  Magnet hospitals are hiring nurses with a BSN level education and RN or Associate degree nurses are finding it much harder to obtain full time work without a BSN.  This program will prepare you for a bright future in nursing. 

The program prepares graduates for the challenges of the complex and changing health-care system. After completing the program, student nurses are eligible to take a licensing exam to become a registered nurse. Selection to this program is competitive.

Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing is a 20-month (5 semester) nursing program for those who have completed a bachelor's degree in any field other than nursing and now desire to become a registered nurse.  Magnet hospitals are hiring nurses with a BSN level education and RN or Associate degree nurses are finding it much harder to obtain full time work without a BSN.  This program will prepare you for a bright future in nursing.

RN to BSN Online is a program designed for working RNs who desire to advance their education.

Students are required to complete 9 nursing courses, plus general education and support courses in order to complete their degree. Many courses needed to complete this program may have been completed during the student's associate degree or diploma nursing education and may be transferable to Ohio University to apply to the hours required to earn a bachelor's degree. All nursing courses (NRSE) will be completed online from Ohio University.

After you are admitted to the RN to BSN Program and your transcripts are received by Ohio University, the information will be reviewed, after which you will receive communication directing you to your personal DARS (Degree Audit Report System), where you will be able to see exactly which requirements have been met.

Application to Ohio University

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) is a comprehensive and focused program designed for active registered nurses who’ve earned their BSN and want to advance their education . The program offers your choice of four specialities: Family Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Administrator, Nurse Educator, and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner.

This program features a robust core curriculum integrating advanced nursing theory and evidence-based nursing practice through case-driven studies. Three of the four specialities are offered in online format, with a one-week on-campus residency requirement. The Acute Care Nurse Practitioner is offered only on the Athens Campus.

Family Nurse Practitioner
Focus on nursing care for children and adults, especially women’s health, across their lifespan. Position yourself to improve the quality of health care in under-served markets and care for patients with health disparities. Further examine the role of the family nurse practitioner and your impact on progressing public health services.

Nurse Administrator
Get involved in the business and leadership that takes place behind the scenes. Learn how health care facilities operate through principles of quality patient care and be equipped to handle the demanding staffing requirements under financial constraints. Discover the details of resource management and the leadership role of an administrator. Study health care finance and reimbursement, process excellence, administration theory, and administration practice.

Nurse Educator
Learn about tools and techniques for staff development to achieve high patient-satisfaction scores. Create accessibility to information about health promotion and disease prevention for patients and their families. Help other nurses become more competent care providers. Apply leadership principles as you explore teaching strategies, develop nursing curriculum, evaluate your team, and prepare to become a future nursing faculty member.

Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
Acute Care Nurse Practitioner is designed for those individuals who wish to develop advanced nursing skills in the care of acutely ill individuals. The option consists of the core courses and several courses specific to the care of very ill adults. Graduates are eligible to sit for the appropriate national certification examination. This person would most likely seek a position in a critical care unit of a hospital.
