Weaving is Life

Athens City Schools 6th Grade H.O.T.S. Program
(Higher Order Thinking Skills) 2000-2001

Collaborative project between Athens City Schools, the Ohio University Kennedy Museum of Art, and the Dairy Barn Cultural Arts Center Artists in the Schools Program.

Tessellations, Symmetry and Art

5th grade Curriculum-based programs 1999-2000

The Athens City School District and the Kennedy Museum of Art formed a partnership in 1999 to develop a model for curriculum based programming at the Museum. Focusing on the fifth grade social studies curriculum and the Museum’s Edwin L. and Ruth E. Kennedy Southwest Native American Collection, the model integrated social studies, art, language/reading, and science with resources offered through the Kennedy Museum of Art.

The goal of the partnership between the Museum and the school district is to focus on the unique potential of learning through direct contact with art objects as primary resources. Learning methods that focus on careful looking at museum objects foster the development of critical and creative thinking skills and acknowledge the strengths of multiple learning styles.

The initial phase of the partnership was funded in part by the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation.
