The Singing Men of Ohio
When I first arrived in Athens in 1996, I was not quite sure what my major would be, but one thing was certain. I needed to be in a choir, preferably the best. What I discovered in the sweltering heat at Baker Center freshman march was a group that shaped who I am today. This group is the Singing Men of Ohio. SMO has a unique dichotomy of being half an ensemble of the School of Music and half a student organization. To join SMO, an audition with the director and an interview with the executive committee have to be completed. I approached Dr. Ira Zook's office door in the Music Building apprehensively. Gave it a hearty knock and his tenor voice echoed with a sharp, "COME IN!" And just as easy as that, I was a member for life.
