Home, on Mill Street
In May of 2000, the Student Senate voted our home on Mill St. the worst
off-campus residence in Athens. My friend, Darin Painter, wrote a
Turnstile
column about our life there.
"Every house has it array of quaint features, and the humble abode at .
. .
Mill St. had plenty. For instance, slope. Like a tricky downhill putt,
my
upstairs bedroom broke slowly from left to right, then quickly back to
the
left just before the hole in the wall. Paint our beloved estate red and
white, toss on a funny hat, shake it twice, and . . . Mill St. becomes
a
Dr. Seuss sketch. One fish, two fish, red fish and other nutritious
items
we never, ever kept in the fridge would have stayed cold, provided the
duct
tape was replaced regularly. Other wise, it was green eggs and ham and,
time permitting, Taco Bell. . . .
I think . . . Mill St. looked like a hundred damn dollars when we left
OU,
and I'm sorry members of Student Senate don't see it that way now. . .
.
Here's the truth: My friends and I took something awful and turned it
into
something awful with sand and seashells and laughter dumped all over
the
place. We loved that house. Loved walking into it every evening and
seeing
friends gathered by the 'captain's chair.' Loved maneuvering the mower
around those shrubs. Loved grilling on the patio, inviting anyone
inside. .
.. . They [Student Senate] could have felt, like the rest of us living
in
the best worst house on Mill Street, as if home."
