1970s: The Statue
During my time at O.U., the statue (The Soldier's Monument) was the meeting place or center of attention for the black students. The statue is located on the College Green across from Baker Center. The gathering of students generally began after noon and continued until the evening.
At the statue, information was passed along, schedules were set, and last night's happenings were retold. The statue was one place black students felt was theirs. Other students were discouraged from sitting on the statue. The statue belongs to us.
