1950s: Sororities Play Football for Funds
In the early to mid 1950s Pi Beta Phi and Alpha Xi Delta held a yearly
Powder Bowl Football game for the benefit of the Damon Runyon Cancer Fund.
Sports Illustrated covered the event in 1954 or '55, and an article with
pictures appeared in the magazine. A year or so after this, the decision
was made (by whom I don't know) to discontinue the event - too many injuries.
