Mechanical Engineering faculty perform research in traditional mechanical engineering areas, including the College's following focus areas: energy and the environment, materials and manufacturing, and bioengineering. Such research serves as a basis for graduate research topics and frequently involves the participation of undergraduate students.

The department's affiliated research centers - the Center for Advanced Materials Processing and the Ohio Coal Research Center - annually account for more than $2 million in research expenditures. Sponsors include the Edison Material Technology Center, National Science Foundation, Ohio Coal Development Office, United States Air Force Research Laboratory, United States Department of Energy, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
