Educating pilots since 1939, the Department of Aviation in the Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University trains tomorrow's aviation professionals. The University-owned and managed airport—with its own fleet, maintenance services, and training facility—and small class sizes enable students to receive individual attention and to forge lifelong bonds.
The Department of Aviation offers a four-year, Bachelor of Science degree in aviation with two major options: flight education and aviation management. Also offered by the department is a two-year, Associate of Applied Science degree in aviation technology.
Per FAA regulation, students must speak, read, write and understand English as determined by the Ohio University Department of Aviation. Non-U.S. citizens must complete all Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background checks and approval prior to beginning flight training.
Flight education students, who begin training during their first year, obtain pilot certification via the department's FAA-approved flight program from private pilot certification through the certified flight instructor rating. Required courses include business management, computer science, and meteorology. Advanced flight training courses include advanced aircraft and flight crew operations, as well as corporate flight operations, with actual experience and training in University-owned executive transport aircraft. The department also offers an airline transport pilot(ATP) course for alumni of the University.
The bachelor's in aviation management, a non-flight option offered in cooperation with the College of Business, provides students with a thorough background in the aviation industry and business aviation. Aviation courses include aeronautics, aviation law, aviation/airline operations and management, the national airspace system, aviation safety, and weather. Business courses include accounting, business law, business and human resources management, economics, and finance.
Students choosing the two-year degree in aviation technology can learn to fly in a professional program or combine aviation with a bachelor's degree in another area such as business or communication. The program enables students to earn their FAA Commercial Certificate with Instrument and Multi-Engine Ratings.
Aviation juniors and seniors compete for internships with many major U.S. airlines and other aviation-related businesses such as NetJets. Students also may participate in Ohio University internships in airport management, flight dispatching, and flight instructing, or as co-pilots in high performance aircraft with the Ohio University Air Transportation Service (ATS). Students interested in the co-pilot internship are eligible as soon as they obtain their Commercial Certificate and Multi-Engine Rating. ATS co-pilots gain valuable experience in corporate flight operations, flying the University-owned turboprop Beechcraft King Air 350 executive transport aircraft.
Ohio University and AirNet Express and NetJets, Part 135 airline operators based in Columbus, Ohio, also have a preferred interview agreement, providing an excellent entry-level opportunity for qualified graduates to gain airline experience before flying for major airlines.
Department of Aviation facilities are housed in the Francis B. Fuller Aviation Training Center at Ohio University Airport (UNI). The training center includes a flight and weather planning room, flight simulator room, flight dispatch office, student resource library, student lounge, conference room, an FAA-approved computerized testing facility, faculty and staff offices, and pilot briefing areas. Basic training aircraft include Cessna 152s, Cessna 172s, glass-cockpit Piper Warriors, a Beechcraft Bonanza, a Beechcraft Baron, and Frasca simulators. Advanced-course aircraft include the Beechcraft King Air 350.
Open 24-hours a day, seven days a week, the Ohio University Airport is located 10 miles southwest of the University. Features of the airport include a new airport terminal building and a recently extended runway to 5,600 feet. Airport landing systems include ILS, NDB, GPS, and AWOS. The University's maintenance facility offers a full range of services provided by licensed A&P and IA experienced mechanics.
Research opportunities exist with Ohio University's Avionics Engineering Center, which develops and tests cutting-edge navigation and cockpit technologies. Specific collaborative projects investigate the effect of new cockpit technology on pilot training. Past projects have included safety research sponsored by the FAA and NASA.
In addition, Russ College students can broaden their horizons with more than 15 engineering organizations and honor societies. The Department of Aviation also offers aviation-specific organizations such as the Flying Bobcats, the University's official flight team. Led by a faculty advisor and a team of senior coaches, the team competes annually throughout the United States in regional and national competitions sponsored by the National Intercollegiate Flying Association. Alpha Eta Rho, an international, professional, co-ed aviation fraternity, provides students with many aviation professional opportunities, including contacts between the students of aviation and these engaged in the profession. The aeronautical honor society Alpha Omicron Alpha promotes academic excellence, safety, and high professional standards among flight students.
Ohio University's student chapter of Women in Aviation, International promotes the participation of women in aviation careers. In Women in Aviation, both men and women can network with aviation professionals and attend national aviation conferences. Students exploring management opportunities are encouraged to join the student chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), which promotes airport management careers and offers scholarships, internships, and job opportunities.

The Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology educates well-rounded professionals with both technical and team-project skills. Enrolling approximately 1,400 undergraduate students and almost 300 graduate students, the Russ College offers undergraduate and graduate degrees across the traditional engineering spectrum and in technology disciplines such as aviation, computer science, and industrial technology. Strategic research areas include bioengineering, energy and the environment, and smart civil infrastructure. Named for alumnus Fritz Russ and his wife Dolores, the Russ College is home of the Russ Prize, one of the top three engineering prizes in the world.
