In February of 1998, the Ohio University Board of Trustees approved the establishment of the Center for the Study and Development of Literacy and Language in the College of Education. The Literacy Center was established by distinguished professor of history and philosophy of education, Dr. Edward W. Stevens, Jr., to foster professional development, research and study into literacy and language in the University as well as the surrounding region.
Today, The Literacy Center, has grown to include partners in several areas of literacy:
- The Central/Southeast ABLE Resource Center provides professional development and resources to adult literacy practitioners in the region and focuses on special needs training.
- AppalCORPS is an Americorps program of volunteers who work in the schools tutoring children in reading.
- Appalachia Reads is a regional collaboration to promote literacy.
- America Reads tutors work with children in grades kindergarten through sixth to improve reading skills.
The Literacy Center is committed to the future of literacy in southeastern Ohio and encouraging and promoting research and study into all areas of literacy.
