Answers from the State GED Office

1.) Programs are putting corrections to student records in comments. The comments do not update a student’s record. How does a program update a student record?

If a student record needs correcting (other than address, phone number, and email, which the student, teacher, or examiner can change) please email both the incorrect and correct information to the dedicated GED email at ged@ode.state.oh.us Once we receive the email we can correct the information for the student.

2) Student records – the GED office has many students calling our office saying their record is not in the system. However when we look the record is there – but maybe not under the number the student gave us. If you cannot find a student record with an applicant ID, please do a further search by:

a) Putting in the student’s name and checking to see what number he/she is under in the system.

b) Doing a wild card search with the first initial and percent sign and first initial of last name with a percent sign (EG. Rich Brown would be: first name and last name) That way you will see all those with those initial in the event the name is misspelled in the system.

3) Can a student take the GED with a valid out of state driver’s license? Yes, the proof of identification can be ANY government issues and valid ID, including driver’s license, state ID, or passport.

GED Help

To help GED customers:

To use the interactive features of the State GED Office for Ohio web page:

  1. Go to www.ode.state.oh.us, the front page of the Ohio Department of Education web site.
  2. Type “GED” into the search box at the upper right and click “GO.”  This will bring up a list of search results.  The first result will say “General Educational Development (GED).”  Click on that link.
  3. The GED page will come up.  This page has a list of search results down the center of the page.  Notice the third link, which says, “GED Web Application Sign In.”  Click on that link.
  4. The next page has two paragraphs of text.  The first paragraph gives people who already have account names and passwords (SAFE accounts) a link to use for signing in.  The second paragraph offers a chance to get a SAFE account by clicking on a link.  Click on the appropriate link.

If you need to get a SAFE account, please have available your Ohio Driver License or Non-Driver ID issued by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), your Social Security Number and your email address.  Follow the instructions to get the SAFE account name and password.  If your driver license or ID was not issued by the Ohio BMV, your procedure will involve sending a form by fax to the Information Services Management office here at the Ohio Department of Education.  Please note that the fax procedure will involve a waiting period of days rather than minutes.

Once you have your SAFE account, sign in.  The next page will include a blue horizontal bar with the word “Application” on its left and “Description” to the right.  Directly under the word “Application” will be a “GED” link.  Click on the GED link.

If you do not have a GED link, please follow these instructions:

The first time you log in, a “Record Verification” screen will come up next.  Enter your Social Security Number in full, your first and last names, and your date of birth.  If you already have information in our system, enter it exactly as it is in the GED system, even if your name has changed or the information has typographical errors.  (You will be able to change the information later.)  Click “Continue.”  You only need to deal with this screen once.

The next page is the “GED Welcome Page.”  A menu on the left side will let you apply or pay for the test,  monitor your application or scoring process or order a transcript or diploma.  Click on the appropriate link for the function you need.
