The Athens tutors partnered with the Athens County Children Services and planned a four hour Fall Festival event for children in foster care. They called upon America Reads, another literacy program, to help with the event. The day consisted of reading, activities, games, food, and prizes. Each child that attended the event received a bag full of school supplies: rulers, pencils, erasers, stickers, crayons, markers, etc. The tutors also collected over 400 books to give away at the event. Each child went home with plenty of books to call their own! -
The Athens tutors would like to thank all of the people and organizations that helped make this event successful. Without the donations of these wonderful people, this event would not have been possible. Thank you to the following: Kroger, White's Mill, Hungry Howie's, Athena Grand, ReUse, ATCO, Wendy's, Appalachia Reads, America Reads, Red Brick, Dorothy Leal, Lisa Barrett, Sharon Reynolds, Tammy Carsey, Sandy Shonborn, Barb Sims, Paula Linscott, David Bower, Family Healthcare and Athens County WIC, and the Athens County Children Services. Monroe/Belmont Counties -
The tutors in Monroe and Belmont ran a huge campaign to collect books for children in foster care and Children Services in their counties. They collected books and monetary donations at four different local football games on October 13, 2006. The money that was collected was used to purchase new books. Each person that contributed books/money received a goodie bag in return. -
The tutors were very successful in collecting books due to the fact that they advertised their project at the local schools and in the local newspapers. They had over 150 people donate! On Make a Difference Day, the tutors distributed 540 books to Monroe County Department of Job and Family Services and the Belmont Head Start program. Scioto County |
