AppalCORPS Focus

AppalCORPS is an AmeriCorps program and part of The Literacy Center in the College of Education at Ohio University. The primary focus of the AppalCORPS program is helping elementary students to improve their reading skills. The AppalCORPS program addresses three specific and related needs:
  • To help meet pressing educational needs in Athens, Monroe, Belmont, and Scioto Counties. This will be accomplished by tutoring elementary students in Athens, Monroe, Belmont, and Scioto Counties during the school year and in the summer.

  • To prepare future community leaders. By serving as AppalCORPS members, individuals develop leadership skills, learn about community needs, and strengthen their commitment to community service. AppalCORPS members generally continue to serve their communities after their term of service has ended.

  • To strengthen communities.  AppalCORPS members organize local networks of non-AppalCORPS volunteers and work with them to undertake local service projects. These activities will continue to benefit the communities long after AppalCORPS has concluded its activities.
