Seven Wonders: introduction

"" Introduction | Ancient World | Modern World | Nature | Internet | Questions

'The Seven Wonders of the World' is the phrase that was used to describe seven remarkable monuments built in the ancient Mediterranean, sights that ancient tourists tried to visit.

It is interesting that NOT ONE of the traditional Seven Wonders is a 'natural wonder.' Many have suggested that the ancients did not see nature as wonderful; instead, they believed that a REAL wonder is one made by people.

Of the original seven wonders, only the Great Pyramids of Egypt still exist.

Since that time, many people and organizations have made lists of 'seven wonders' of nature and culture. Today, the most important list is probably UNESCO's (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) World Heritage List
