I am excited to be teaching in OPIE at Ohio University!

My journey as an ESL instructor began in the multicultural environment of southern California, where I grew up. As a young person I had friends from many different countries and cultural backgrounds, and was often employed as an ESL tutor.

When I was 19 years old, I taught for a year at a private school on a small island in the South China Sea. After graduating from college, I returned to teach in China for five more years—two and a half years at Zhengzhou University, and then two and a half additional years at North University of China in Taiyuan. While in Taiyuan I also had the opportunity to supervise and train other American teachers, and to develop an extensive program-wide curriculum that is still used by hundreds of American teachers across China. After returning to America, I taught at a small language program in California that prepared international students for graduate studies, prior to joining OPIE in 2009.

I’m grateful for all the opportunities I’ve have to live abroad, travel, and meet so many amazing people. I can also relate to some of the experiences of OPIE students, as I too lived far from my home culture as a young adult. I have a great deal of respect for the courage of those who have come to Ohio University from other countries, and I do my best to help my students adjust to life here and improve their English so that they can achieve their goals. I look forward to seeing you in class!
