Japanese Contests & Awards
Japanese Language Speech Contest in Ohio
The Japan America Society of Central Ohio in cooperation with the
Consulate General of Japan in Detroit hosts the Japanese Language
Speech Contest in Ohio in March every year. The detail will be
announced on the begining of January. The 3rd/4th year Japanese
students are required to apply to the contest. The 2nd year students
are encouraged to apply to it.

The Ohio University Japanese Program Award [OUJP Award]
This award program aims to encourage qualified students to take the
Japanese Language Proficiency Test administered by the Japan Foundation
Language Center. To know more about the Japanese Language Proficiency
Test, go to The Japan Foundation Los Angels web site. General
information including the guideline of level is available at The Japan
Foundation Sydney office.

the information 2006, pleasea wait until we get the official
information from JASCO.

Prize The grand prize winner possibly will awarded a round-trip ticket

* speech drafts (two copies) written in essay paper (sample is included
in the application)
* indivisual standard size audio cassette recordings of each
applicant's Japanese speech.
Submit your application and other materials to your
instructor by FRIDAY, FEBURARY 4, 2005.
The OU Finalists: the Annual Japanese Language Speech
Contest

Finalists: 2004 Competition
Every year, about 10 finalists are selected for the
finals competition.
*Currently, the 1st place is the highest rank in the
university category. However, the grand prize used to be the highest
award chosen from both high school and university students before the
2002 competition.

The OUJP Award (9/15/04)
The Purpose
This award program aims to encourage qualified students to take the
Japanese Language Proficiency Test administered by the Japan Foundation
Language Center.
The Award Amount
The minimum amount of the award is equal to the application fee of the
examination (currently $50 for Levels 1 & 2 and $40 for Levels
3 & 4). If the student passes the examination, however, the
award amount will be doubled.
The Number of Awards
Each year, 3 or 4 students will be selected.
Eligibility
To qualify for the award, students must complete a Japanese course at
300 level or above in the Fall Quarter immediately before the
proficiency test which they take in December. Specifically, those
students who take the test in Japan as part of the Chubu Study Abroad
Program do not qualify for this award.
Application Process
Interested students should apply to the Japanese Program through an
instructor who knows them well. The deadline of the application is mid
September each year. Please submit a short statement of application
(within 300 words) with your name and e-mail address, explaining the
significance of the proficiency test for your overall goal of Japanese
study and/or career plan.
Selection Criteria
Awardees are selected by the teaching staff in the Japanese Program
based on the statement of application, the teacher's recommendation and
their overall performance and progress in Japanese courses at OU.
Announcement of Award
The names of the awardees will be announced immediately after the
selection. They will receive a certificate in recognition of the award.
Payment of Award
Upon receiving official notification from the Japan Foundation, the
awardees should contact the Japanese Program Director. Payment of the
award money will be arranged through the Linguistics Department
together with a copy of the test result notification and an award
certificate.
Deadline of Application
The deadline of award application for the 2004 test is Tuesday,
September 21.
