Midterm 1
(50 points) scheduled on Monday, April 19 will consist of the following:
All
the listening comprehension materials covered for the weekly quizzes (MQ1
through MQ3) and LC1 & LC2. Expect most questions in this section will be
based on dialogues.
You will read, write and tell
the meanings of words written with the target Kanji in Chapter 5.
The vocabulary includes all
the words in Chapter 5 (but review particularly those used in class).
All the grammar points we have
covered in class.
G29: Describing a Change in
State
G30: Honorific Forms
G31: Humble Forms
G32: Passives (both direct and
indirect passives)
Try to remember each
pattern with example sentences.
The reading text(s) will be
about a life story about some imaginary person and/or a conversation of job
application or job interview.
Review
the vocabulary covered in Chapter 5 (especially, loan words) and the phrases
and expressions in the listening material used for the LC1 and LC2 assignments
as well as in the Yan san video.
Advice: Review old quizzes, handouts, homework assignments, etc. quickly
and at least a couple of times. This should give you an idea about what is
important and whether or not you have mastered it. Concentrate on those that
are important but you are not yet comfortable with. Do not try to learn
things that look totally new to you at this point. They may take extra efforts
to master or may not be so important after all.

reading section contains a couple of original texts, which were not covered in
class. One of them will be about a life story about some imaginary person. The
other(s) may be about personal interactions at a post office and/or in a job
interview situation. Thorough review of grammar and vocabulary should prepare
you for this section. Also, it may be helpful to review the materials in
LC1 through LC6 as well as Yokoso Video Skits 26, 27,
28 and the Language Functions and Situations <At the Post Office> on p.
343 of the textbook.
You write an essay of
approximately 15 lines under the topic of either "A Short Biography of Mr./Ms. XXX" or "My Little Research on
