Midterm 1 Announcement
(subject to minor changes)

Midterm 1 (50 points) scheduled on Tuesday, February 2nd, will consist of the following:

All the listening comprehension materials covered for the weekly quizzes (MQ1 through MQ4) and LC1 & LC2. Expect most questions in this section will be based on dialogues.


You will read, write and tell the meanings of words written with the target Kanji in Chapter 3.

The vocabulary includes all the words in Chapter 3 (but review particularly those used in class).
 


All the grammar points we have covered in class.

G17: How to Do Something

G18: Transitive and Intransitive Verbs

G19: Expressing Results and States of Being

G20: Expressing an Attempt

G21: Expressing a Just-Completed Action

G22: Without Doing

Try to remember each pattern with example sentences.
 


The reading text(s) will be based on the Language Functions and Situations in pp. 181-184 of the textbook  ("Asking for and Giving Instructions" and "Cheering Up and Encouraging Others").
 

Review the vocabulary covered in Chapter 3 (especially, loan words) and the phrases and expressions in the listening material used for the LC1 and LC2 assignments as well as in the Yan san video.


Advice: Review old quizzes, handouts, homework assignments, etc. quickly and at least a couple of times. This should give you an idea about what is important and whether or not you have mastered it. Concentrate on those that are important but you are not yet comfortable with. Do not try to learn things that look totally new to you at this point. They may take extra efforts to master or may not be so important after all.

G25: Talking about Appearance

G26: Causatives

G27: Construction Using Interrogatives

G28: Expressing Expectation

The reading section contains a couple of original texts, which were not covered in class.  Thorough review of grammar and vocabulary should prepare you for this section.  Also, it may be helpful to review the materials in the Language Functions and Situations, "Asking for and Giving Instructions", "Cheering Up and Encouraging Others" (pp. 181-184), "At a Pharmacy", "At a Clinic" (pp. 234-237), and /or the Listening Comprehension materials used for LC1 through LC5.
 


You write an essay of approximately 15 lines on one of the following topics: "Why I Am Studying Japanese", "What I Want to Do in the 21st Century", "My (or My Family Member's) Unforgettable Visit at a Doctor's Office" or "How I Try to Stay Healthy". You will be asked to use as many grammatical patterns as you know, especially those studied in this quarter.
