Midterm #1 Announcement
Midterm #1 scheduled on Tuesday, February 02 will cover the following materials:
Listening Comprehension [10 points]: Y/N questions on some of the textbook activities--all the dialogues covered for QA#2-4 (see their announcements).
Vocabulary Identification [5 points]: Your instructor will read the list of words covered for QA#2-3 (see their announcements), of which you identify at least 5 words.
Writing [10 points]: You will be asked to write in Japanese what you did “yesterday”. Review past forms of verbs, expressions of time, sentence connecting words, etc.
Particles [10 points]: You will be given a short paragraph written in Japanese and asked to fill in blanks with appropriate particles.
Answering in Japanese[10 points]: You will be asked to write responses to questions in Japanese based on provided cues. Review how to use different forms of verbs (past vs. non-past, affirmative vs. negative, etc.) and how to make/respond to suggestions and invitations.
Kanji Reading [5 points]: You will be
asked
to write the reading of some kanji words in hiragana. All the kanji are
from the target kanji in Chapter 1 and Chapter 2.
Study the following Kanji: DAIGAKU, GAKUSEI, NIHON,
NIHONJIN,
NIHONGO, SENSEI, HANASHIMASU, SUKI, MACHI, YAMA, UE, SHITA, NAKA, and
months
of the year (ICHIGATSU, NIGATSU, SANGATSU...JUNIGATSU)
Katakana (Extra Points): You will be asked to read and write the target Katakana. You will be also asked write the meaning of Katakana words in English. Review workbook pp. 88-90.

Midterm #2 Announcement
Midterm #2 scheduled on Friday, February 26 will cover the following materials:
Listening Comprehension: You will answer Y/N questions based
on dialogues on the textbook. All the dialogues covered for Q5-7,
and LC1-2 (questions will be original.)
Plain Forms of Verbs: You will be asked to write the Plain Past Affirmative, Plain Non-past Negative, and Plain Past Negative forms of common verbs.
Comparative/Superlative Sentences: You will be asked to write Japanese sentences, using …YORI,…NONAKADE,…ICHIBAN,…TO ONAJIGURAI,…HODO.
Particles: You will be given a short paragraph written in Japanese and asked to fill in blanks with appropriate particles.
Reason, Probability and Conjecture: You will be asked to complete dialogues, using …NDESU(KA), …DESHOU, or …KAMOSHIREMASEN.
Reading: You will be given a dialogue in Japanese and asked to answer about its content.
Kanji Writing/Reading: You will be asked to write in hiragana the reading of some kanji. Most kanji come from Chapter 3 with a few from Chapters 1 and 2.
Katakana & Kanji (Extra 5 Points): You will be asked to write the meanings of basic Katakana words in English.

Final Exam Announcement
The Final Examination scheduled on March 17 will cover all the materials from Chapter 3 through Chapter 5 that have been dealt with in class. For details, consult the syllabus and the handouts given in class. Review old handouts, quizzes, midterms, homework assignments, activity guidelines, etc. For this exam, the ability to read and write basic vocabulary in Hiragana,Katakana and familiar Kanji is essential.
Following are some of the language items and question types that will appear on the exam (which of course are subject to minor change):
Listening comprehension: The test will be based
on
material taken from the following sources:
a) the ten weekly-quiz announcements;
b) the two midterm anouncements.
c) Listening Comprehension 3-5 (listening comprehension on p.
290 of the textbook, CD seven:20)
The questions will be original.

Particles: You fill in blanks in a paragraph with appropriate
particles.
Answers to short questions in Japanese: Review past and non-past forms and plain and polite forms of verbs so that you can answer short questions about your life and give opinions about people and activities.
Comparatives and Superlatives: You write sentences comparing the weather conditions of different places shown on a map. Review the usage of a) ~YORI , b) ~NONAKADE,~ICHIBAN~, c) ~TOONAJI, d) ~HODO~(negative), etc.
Completion of short dialogues: Review how to use ~NDESU, ~DESHOU, ~KAMOSIREMASEN, ~TEKUDASAI etc.
Completion of a long dialogue: Review the expressions of suggestions such as ~MASHOU(KA), ~MASENKA etc.
Short questions and answers in Japanese: You fill answer short questions in Japanese. Most questions are about yourself.
Short reading: You read a short passage and answer True/False questions.
Long reading: You read a long passage and answer True/False questions. Review well recent reading materials given as homework or done in class.
Writing a journal: You write a short personal journal entry (10 lines or more) about a particular day in the past.
Also review: TE-forms of adjectives, verbs and the copula and their usage and describing ability.
Extra Points (15): Meanings of Katakana words and reading and writing of the target Kanji from Chapter 1 through Chapter 4 (but not of Chapter 5).
