English 150A/151A

Overview

English 150A and 151A are composition courses meeting English department requirements but specially designed for international undergraduate students and taught by faculty with extensive experience teaching international students and composition.

English 150A

Sample syllabus (from a summer version of the course, eight hours per week)

English 150A is designed to prepare international undergraduates for English 151A (this course is also open to students who test into 151A).

Course writing assignments & topics:

Paragraph & essays: reading, writing, genre studies, critiquing, & revision strategies; research, plagiarism, & citation practice (using MLA style); contextualized grammar with individual feedback; development, coherence, rhetorical styles/modes, in-class essay tests, & journal writing.
"C" or higher must be earned to move on to English 151A

English 151A

Sample syllabus

English 151A is designed to meet international undergraduates special needs in a Freshman Composition context.

Course writing assignments & topics:

Essay reading & writing with an emphasis on using research to support arguments; judging, analyzing, quoting, paraphrasing, quoting, & citing/avoiding plagiarism; summaries & critiques of essays; Western rhetoric & argumentation; critical reading & thinking skills; contextualized sentence structure, academic register, & style.

Monday: 5 pm – 7 pm
Tuesday: 5 pm – 7 pm
Wednesday: 5 pm – 7 pm
Thursday: 5 pm – 7 pm
