Exploring Athens: Some
assignments
- Dinner in Athens…Go to our Dining page and find three
places to eat in Athens. Each should be good for a different situation:
1) an inexpensive meal for a group of students; 2) a business lunch; 3)
a romantic dinner with a date. Print information on each restaurant and
tell your classmates about them.
- Homework: during a quiet
period before or after the dinner or lunch hour, visit three Athens
restaurants. You don't have to eat anything -- just go in the door and
look around (if someone offers to help, you can say "No thanks - I'm
just looking at the menu"). If possible, ask for a menu to bring it
back to class. Be prepared to describe the restaurant (is it
noisy...dark...attractive...small...etc)
- Kennedy Museum exhibit: A recent
exhibit at the Kennedy Museum is entitled 'Athens Collects.' There is a
website
about the exhibit and a story about it at the Athens
News. You can find more unusual collections at RoadsideAmerica.com,
MuseumStuff.com,and
eBay
Collectibles. Find a collection that you think the class
would like to visit.
- A hotel for your family: Imagine
that your aunt and uncle are coming to Athens for a visit and they've
asked you to find a nice hotel. Use the information on Athens lodging to find three
possible places to stay (don't forget to consider some of the nicer
country inns and lodges).
- Homework: Write a letter to
your aunt and uncle suggesting three places they might stay in Athens,
explaining each choices location, accommodations, and costs, and telling
how to get in touch with each.
- Weekend Plans: Check the weather forecast for Athens this
weekend and then decide on two or three possible activities for
Saturday afternoon. Use OU's
'Fun' page as well as our Recreation,
Tourism, Arts, and other resources to help
plan.
- Homework: Write a
brief essay for the local newspaper on 'what's happening in Athens this
weekend.'
- A place to live: Explore the options for rental and
purchase in Athens at our housing
page.
- Homework 1: Prepare
a poster or powerpoint presentation on the Athens housing market.
- Homework 2: Find
suitable housing for a family of five (with three school-age children)
in Athens. In your own words, write a comparison of three or four
attractive housing options.
- Homework 3: Write an
essay comparing housing in Athens with housing in Columbus Ohio, or
with another city of your choice. Research using information on rentals
and purchased housing (in Columbus, you might look here
for rental information and here for
housing for sale).
