INVOLVEMENTS AT OU: Ohio University O-Zone President (2008-2009), Ohio University Tour Guide WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BE AN ALLY? It is important to be an LGBT Ally because I feel that I can give support to those who may need support as well as setting an example for those who may be hesitant or scared to support the LGBT community. Being an Ally is being educated and open-minded and can even regard something as little as correcting someone who uses language that may be offensive to other people. WHY ARE YOU “PROUD”? WHAT ARE YOU MOST “PROUD” OF? I am proud to support the LGBT community because, as an Ally, I cannot begin to understand what members of the LGBT community might face in their everyday lives that heterosexual people take so easily for granted. During this time of injustice toward the LGBT community in our nation, I am proud to display my name, face, beliefs, and my SafeZone pin in order to assertively state what I believe in. WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF COMING OUT? I am a heterosexual male and an LGBT Ally. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHERS WHO COME OUT? There are people who will be proud of you, support you, and love you for the very person that you are. I promise to be one of those people. THOUGHTS FOR NON-LGBT PEOPLE ABOUT LGBT PEOPLE AND CONCERNS: Get educated, be informed, and be open-minded towards LGBT issues because someone may need your love and support someday. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: It would be a great honor to be part of this campaign because this is another chance among many to help make a difference and to make a statement. As President of the largest student organization at Ohio University, as a proud bobcat, and even as a familiar face around campus, I consider this a privilege to be chosen for the 2009 Faces of Pride campaign. I look forward to hearing back and thank you for the opportunity.
