Susanne B. Dietzel, Ally Director, Women's Center INVOLVEMENTS AT OU: As Director of the Women's Center I work regularly with the LGBT Center, as well as with LGBT students. I consider consciousness-raising and activism around LGBT issues part of the mission of the Women's Center. I am dedicated to creating a campus climate that is friendly to all members of our community. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BE OUT or TO BE AN ALLY? In order to successfully fight homophobia, everyone, whether Gay, Lesbian, straight, etc., needs to speak out about it and stand in solidarity with LGBT folks. No one benefits from any form of hate and we need to commit ourselves to ending it in our community. WHY ARE YOU “PROUD”? WHAT ARE YOU MOST “PROUD” OF? I am proud to proclaim my love and respect for my LGBT sisters and brothers. WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF COMING OUT? As a heterosexual white woman I have a lot of privileges and I use them to raise awareness about homophobia. Sometimes that is difficult, but mostly it is not. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHERS WHO COME OUT? As an Ally, do what is right for you. THOUGHTS FOR NON-LGBT PEOPLE ABOUT LGBT PEOPLE AND CONCERNS: Hate is not a human value. Love is universal. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: I am proud to be working with the LGBT Center and look forward to many years of successful cooperation.
