Carey Busch, Lesbian Assistant Director, Disability Services WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BE OUT or TO BE AN ALLY? I believe it is easier for non-LGBT people to ignore or discount LGBT people and concerns when we are "invisible." I also feel it is important for people who are coming out to know where they may go for support. WHY ARE YOU “PROUD”? WHAT ARE YOU MOST “PROUD” OF? I am most proud to be an intelligent and compassionate woman who is a great daughter, aunt, sister, and friend who happens to be a Lesbian. WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF COMING OUT? The most difficult part is that it is a process that occurs on a daily basis. Each time I go somewhere or meet someone new I am assumed to be heterosexual. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHERS WHO COME OUT? There really is no right or wrong way to come out, you need to find what works for you. Also, know that there is support to help you find your way and don't be afraid to use it! THOUGHTS FOR NON-LGBT PEOPLE ABOUT LGBT PEOPLE AND CONCERNS: I truly believe that LGBT concerns are everyone's concerns. You never know when you will discover that a best friend, family member, co-worker identifies as LGBT, so be proactive in your awareness.
