Jennifer Schuler, Ally Graduate Student, College Student Personnel (Residence Life)
INVOLVEMENTS AT OU: Student Personnel Association WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BE AN ALLY? I am proud to be an LGBT Ally because I am educated on LGBT issues and I want the LGBT community to know that I stand up for their rights and that there are others who also support LGBT people. WHY ARE YOU “PROUD”? WHAT ARE YOU MOST “PROUD” OF? I am proud to be an Ally because of the education I have received about the LGBT community. I have the ability to accept everyone regardless of their sexual orientation and I am proud of that! WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF COMING OUT? The most difficult thing about "coming out" as an Ally is others not accepting my views on "different" sexual orientations. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHERS WHO COME OUT? I have 3 simple but often difficult rules for one to follow: 1.) Be yourself! If you do not fit into an identity…discover yourself and figure out what you want as an individual; 2.) Be proud and be an advocate for not only yourself but also the LGBT-"Q" community; and 3.) Be happy! Everyone has the right to be happy! THOUGHTS FOR NON-LGBT PEOPLE ABOUT LGBT PEOPLE AND CONCERNS: Stop tolerance and help yourself and others towards acceptance! Become educated and educate others on the LGBT community. Everyone has the capability of loving…so love everyone and love everyone equally.
