Andrea Manning, Lesbian Residential Coordinator, Department of Residence Life and Off-Campus Living
INVOLVEMENTS AT OU: Residential Coordinator, the Residence Action Council, Division of Student Affairs on the Professional Development Committee. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BE OUT? It’s important for me to be out because that is the only way that I can truly support the LGBT community. I want to be a strong, positive role model for them and also actively advocate for their needs. I feel that it is important to represent the LGBT community and it is hard to do that in the closet. WHY ARE YOU “PROUD”? WHAT ARE YOU MOST “PROUD” OF? I am proud. I am proud that I decided to come out to my friends, parents and myself. It is very difficult to accept who you are and it is important to be proud of the accomplishments you make. It is also hard to put yourself out there. Understanding yourself is a huge accomplishment. WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF COMING OUT? The most difficult part of coming out is getting over the fear of doing it. Once you are able to get your fear out of the way it is easy. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHERS WHO COME OUT? My advice is to find a friend or a network to support you before you come out. Seek out those who you feel safe around and also read about coming out. Read about being gay, and educate yourself. THOUGHTS FOR NON-LGBT PEOPLE ABOUT LGBT PEOPLE AND CONCERNS: Be an advocate. Learn to understand by asking questions. Don’t be afraid you will offend anyone by asking questions. If you fail to ask, you are failing them as a friend, ally, and advocate. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: I am here for you.
