Jenna Hazelton, Ally Senior, Middle Childhood Education
INVOLVEMENTS AT OU: I am an Administrative Resident Assistant in Residence Life. I am also an executive member of the Residents' Action Council (tRAC). I sit on various committees, such as the Paraprofessional Team and East Green Residence Life Council in the Department of Residence Life and Off-Campus Living. Currently, I am also the acting president of the Joseph A. Burke Chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH). WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BE AN ALLY? It is important to be an Ally to support the LGBT community in everything they do. The LGBT community at Ohio University is one of the more prominent communities on a college campus that I have seen and it is largely due to such an accepting population and strong Ally group. Allies are able to get the word out about various programs and show others that supporting the LGBT community is very important. WHY ARE YOU “PROUD”? WHAT ARE YOU MOST “PROUD” OF? I am proud that Ohio University has such a large, accepting, and prominent LGBT community on campus and in the Athens area. The LGBT Center is an amazing resource and there are multiple large-scale programs every month that are LGBT related and/or sponsored. Ohio University is a very liberal and accepting campus that I am proud to call "home." THOUGHTS FOR NON-LGBT PEOPLE ABOUT LGBT PEOPLE AND CONCERNS: Becoming friends with a large portion of the LGBT community in Athens and on other campuses has taught me to be accepting not only of myself, but of other people. The LGBT community is one of the most accepting groups of people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Each person brings something new and exciting to my life and I couldn't be happier or more proud to call myself an Ally and "friend of the gays."
