INVOLVEMENTS AT OU: LGBT Affairs Commissioner of Student Senate, Office Assistant of the LGBT Center, member of Open Doors, ALLY and EWO. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BE OUT or TO BE AN ALLY? The LGBT community derives strength from numbers. The more people there are that come out and live honestly, the safer we all can feel in our day-to-day lives. WHY ARE YOU “PROUD”? WHAT ARE YOU MOST “PROUD” OF? I am proud to know I can stand up for myself. I can ignore the easy route and do what is best for me, those I love and others. WHAT WAS THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF COMING OUT? I feared disappointing my parents, and even breaking my mother’s heart. In the end, I knew love and honesty could win out over those fears. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHERS WHO COME OUT? Take strength in those who are already out. Find others to support you and don’t place unreal expectations on yourself. THOUGHTS FOR NON-LGBT PEOPLE ABOUT LGBT PEOPLE AND CONCERNS: Every person is different. Every queer person is different. All straight couples do not meet, date, kiss, and sleep together in the same way. All queer couples do not meet, date, kiss, and sleep together in the same way. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Ohio University can be a wonderfully diverse and inclusive community. Let us strive always to celebrate and live up to those qualities.
